CLERMONT — The Wewahitchka Lady Gators wrapped up the
2020-21 softball season Tuesday afternoon, at the 1A state softball semifinals,
as the Jay Lady Royal tallied a 7-2 victory
With the victory, the Royals (24-5) advanced to Wednesday's state title game against Trenton, a 3-2 winner over Bradford.
Wewa finished the season at 21-4.
Pitcher Mattie Cochran pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing no walks, as she gave up two unearned runs on four hits and no walks. Haley Guffey took the loss for the Gators, allowing seven runs, four earned. – on 12 hits and three walks, with eight strikeout.
Kylie Parker had a hit and a run for Wewahitchka, with Guffey, Savannah Mayhann, and Madison Forehand all getting hits.
Brett Watson put Jay out front in the top of the second inning with a two-RBI single to left field. The Gators got on the board on an error in the fourth but gave up a run with a run-scoring error in the fifth.
After Jay put up three runs in the sixth, on a two-run homer to center and a solo shot to left field, and then another one in the seventh, as Wewa managed a second run in the bottom of the seventh.
Jay out-hit Wewahitchka 12-4 for the game, while both teams committed four defensive errors.
