Boys state weightlifting meet opens Thursday

The FHSAA boys weightlifting state championships will be held at the Port St. Joe gymnasium third Thursday through Saturday, April 21-23, with 3A schools competing on Thursday, 2A schools on Friday, and 1A schools on Saturday. 

The morning session will consist of competition in both the snatch and the traditional (bench, clean and jerk) lifts in the 119-, 129-, 139-, 154- and 169-pound weight classes.

In the afternoon session, the 183-, 199-, 219-, 238-, and Unlimited-pound classes will compete

Port St. Joe will be represented on Saturday by Jacob Marshall in the 154-pound, snatch competition. Devin Cuttino, at 139 pounds, Tad Russell and P.J. Jones both at 169 pounds, Chase Lanford at 183 pounds, Aiden Gainer at 219 pounds and D.J. Oliver at 238 pounds will compete in the traditional competition. 

Wewa, who won both the district and regional competitions, will send a sizable contingent to both types of lifts. 

Competing in both snatch and traditional will be Cole Williams, at 119 pounds, Corbin Hysmith at 129 pounds, Bryson Greene at 139 pounds, Tremaine Booker at 169 pounds, Braxton Durden at 219-pounds, and Preston Staley at 238-pounds.

Landin Webb at 119 pounds, Nathan Combs at 154 pounds, Avery Davis at 169 pounds, Caden Wooten at 238 pounds, and Noah Taunton, at Unlimited, will compete in snatch. 

Jake Parker at 119 pounds, and Joey Salerno at 183 pounds will lift against other 1A athletes in the traditional events. 

Admission is $9 per event if purchased in advance or $12 at the gate. Parking will be $10 per day, and gates will open at 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. session. The second session begins at 2:30 p.m. each day.
